UK guide
Why is my website getting visitors but no enquiries?
The short answer
Most visitors decide in a few seconds, on a phone. If they cannot immediately see that you do the job they need, in their area, and how to contact you, they go back and pick the next result. The fix is usually clarity and friction, not a new design.
The likely causes
- 1
The first screen doesn’t answer “can you help me?”
A slogan and a stock photo don’t tell someone with a leaking pipe that you are a plumber who covers their postcode. The first screen needs the service, the area and the way to get in touch.
- 2
Contacting you is harder than it should be
A phone number that isn’t tappable, a form with ten required fields, or a “contact us” page three clicks away all lose enquiries. On mobile, the call button should never be more than a thumb away.
- 3
Nothing proves you are real
Customers are wary of cowboys. Real photos of your own work, named areas you have worked in, and accreditations you actually hold (Gas Safe, NICEIC, FMB) do more than any amount of “trusted local experts” copy.
- 4
The site is slow on mobile data
Large uncompressed images and heavy page builders can take several seconds to load on a phone signal. Many visitors leave before the page appears.
- 5
You are getting the wrong visitors
Traffic from unrelated searches or other regions looks good in analytics and never turns into work. Search Console shows which searches actually bring people in.
How to check it yourself
No tools to buy. Most of this takes a few minutes.
- 1
The five-second phone test
Open your site on your phone, on mobile data, and count to five. Can you see what you do, where you work and how to call? If not, neither can your customers.
- 2
Try to contact yourself
Tap the phone number, send the form, press the WhatsApp button. Did everything work, and did the message actually arrive?
- 3
Run PageSpeed Insights
Enter your address at pagespeed.web.dev and look at the mobile result, especially how long the main content takes to appear.
- 4
Look at the searches that bring people in
Google Search Console’s Performance report lists the searches your site appears for. Are they the jobs you want?
What can realistically be improved
- A first screen that states service, area and how to contact you
- Tap-to-call and a short form on every page
- Real photos of your work instead of stock images
- Faster loading on mobile connections
- Separate pages for your main services, so each can answer a specific search
What nobody can promise
A website can’t fix pricing, response times or reputation. If enquiries arrive and nobody answers the phone for two days, the site isn’t the problem.
