US guide
Why are competitors ranking above me on Google Maps?
The short answer
Because Google judges the whole picture, not just your website. The businesses above you usually have a better-matched category, more recent reviews, more consistent details across the web, or are simply closer to the person searching. Some are paying for adverts that sit above the map.
The likely causes
- 1
Some of them are adverts
Results marked “Sponsored” are paid. Local Services Ads, with a “Google Guaranteed” or “Google Screened” badge, sit above the map for many home-service searches and are paid per lead. They don’t affect the map pack below them.
- 2
Their reviews are more recent and more specific
Twenty reviews from the past three months that mention the actual job (“replaced our boiler”, “fixed a leak under the sink”) do more than a hundred reviews from five years ago. Reviews on Yelp or Angi also build trust with the people comparing you.
- 3
Their details agree everywhere
When a business’s name, phone number and service area are the same on its website, Google and Yelp, Angi and Thumbtack, Google trusts it more. Old addresses and second phone numbers quietly count against you.
- 4
Their category and services are a closer match
If they chose “HVAC company” and you chose something broader, they match the search better. The services listed inside the profile matter too.
- 5
They are closer to the searcher
Distance is part of the ranking. A competitor on the same street as the customer will often win “near me” searches, whatever else is true.
How to check it yourself
No tools to buy. Most of this takes a few minutes.
- 1
Compare categories
Open a competitor’s profile, tap “About” and compare their categories and listed services with yours.
- 2
Compare review recency, not just totals
Sort their reviews by newest. How many are from the last 90 days? How many are yours?
- 3
Search your own phone number
Put your number in quotes into Google. Every listing that comes back should show the same name and address or service area.
- 4
Separate ads from rankings
Ignore anything labelled Sponsored when you are judging where you actually rank.
What can realistically be improved
- A steady routine for asking every happy customer for a review
- Replying to every review, good or bad
- Correcting old or duplicate listings
- Matching categories and services to the jobs you want
- Adding real photos of recent work to your profile and website
What nobody can promise
Some advantages cannot be copied quickly: a competitor’s years of accumulated reviews, or an office in the middle of the city. The aim is to close the gaps you control and win the searches where you are genuinely the best fit.
